NEW YORK — Animal-welfare groups are accusing the trustees of hotel queen Leona Helmsley’s multibillion-dollar estate of ignoring her wishes that the lion’s share of the money should go to the dogs.

Instead, the animal advocates said Tuesday, the trustees have shown “disdain” for Helmsley’s pet cause by donating only $100,000 to dog welfare. (more…)

Rescuers focus on pets in need in rural parts of state

A path carpeted with beer bottles, rusted cans, matted fabric and food containers leads to a maze of cages opening into one another, dead-ending, stretching far into the woods.

It’s easy to get lost here off Merry Road in a remote part of western Pulaski County. Out of the Woods rescuers Cindy Paxton and Lori Sattler, each carrying a dog abandoned and caged for months, use the skull and bones of another dog as a landmark pointing the way out. (more…)

London’s greyhound track closes

LONDON — The finish line is looming for the greyhounds of Walthamstow Stadium, a London landmark frequented by everyone from Winston Churchill to Brad Pitt and where David Beckham worked as a teenager.

Saturday sees the end for the 75-year-old temple to the archetypal British sport of greyhound racing. Famed for its heady atmosphere and pink-and-green neon sign, the track is closing after the owners agreed to sell the site to developers. (more…)

Dog saved as shelter marks 1st anniversary

With tails awag and faces painted, pets and supporters of The Little Rock Animal Village marked its first anniversary Saturday as rescuers teamed up with the shelter’s vet to save one dog’s life.

A call came in about 12:30 p.m. to Cindy Paxton, volunteer for the birthday celebration and for Out of the Woods Rescue and Referral, that a very pregnant beagle was roaming the highway in an unincorporated area of Pulaski County. (more…)
