Rescuers focus on pets in need in rural parts of state

A path carpeted with beer bottles, rusted cans, matted fabric and food containers leads to a maze of cages opening into one another, dead-ending, stretching far into the woods.

It’s easy to get lost here off Merry Road in a remote part of western Pulaski County. Out of the Woods rescuers Cindy Paxton and Lori Sattler, each carrying a dog abandoned and caged for months, use the skull and bones of another dog as a landmark pointing the way out. (more…)

Volunteers earn red aprons at LR shelter

It’s like karate, only with aprons and no martial arts.

About 20 people showed up for the first volunteer training session at Little Rock Animal Village on Monday night to earn their red aprons, which indicates completion of Level 1 training. (more…)

Dog saved as shelter marks 1st anniversary

With tails awag and faces painted, pets and supporters of The Little Rock Animal Village marked its first anniversary Saturday as rescuers teamed up with the shelter’s vet to save one dog’s life.

A call came in about 12:30 p.m. to Cindy Paxton, volunteer for the birthday celebration and for Out of the Woods Rescue and Referral, that a very pregnant beagle was roaming the highway in an unincorporated area of Pulaski County. (more…)

Bunny lovers gather for tips, resources

Don’t waste your money on bunny toys; egg crates, soda bottles with bells in them, or a plain cardboard box are far more appreciated. Not all veterinarians are qualified to care for rabbits, so it’s important to consult approved vets.

These are just a few of the tips offered to 20 people and about half a dozen bunnies who attended the Arkansas Pet Rabbit Network meeting Saturday at the Dee Jones Library. (more…)
