SELDEN, N.Y. — Authorities are working to determine if any of the 20 dead dogs found buried in a Long Island woman’s backyard might have been pets stolen from neighbors.

Sharon McDonough pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor animal cruelty charges last weekend. Her 21-year-old son told authorities that animals had been abused at her Selden home. They say five dogs and a cat were found in wretched conditions inside. (more…)

WASHINGTON — My dad figured he had all the time in the world to take care of Rocky. What he didn’t realize was that he needed quite a bit of money too.

My dad has a decent pension from his job as a cafeteria worker at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital in New York. But all the pet food, veterinarian visits and other expenses are making a dent on his budget. Still, he loves Rocky and won’t give him up. NEW YORK — It’s nothing against the Obamas. But some Portuguese water dog owners aren’t thrilled the breed is a front-runner for the first family.

Westminster show braces for economic bite

Uno the beagle, winner of the 2008 Westminster Kennel Club dog show, is back in New York after a yearlong victory lap that took him to opening-pitch ceremonies at Major League baseball games, the White House and downtime on his ranch in Austin, Texas.

Uno was the first beagle named best in show in Westminster’s 132 years. He made an appearance at a press preview yesterday at the Hotel Pennsylvania, baying before a gauntlet of cameras. (more…)

NEW YORK — Barack Obama and John McCain will attend a New York cat show this weekend — Obama the Bombay cat and McCain the American Shorthair, that is.

The two felines are vying for the title of “Purr-fect President” at the Cat Fanciers’ Association-IAMS 2008 championship that opens Saturday at Madison Square Garden. (more…)

NY prosecutor: Jealous boyfriend killed cat

NEW YORK — The trial has begun for a baseball player-turned-actor accused of brutally killing a cat in a jealous rage after complaining that his ex-girlfriend cared more for the feline than she did for him.

Assistant District Attorney Leila Kermani said the cat named Norman died with broken teeth, broken ribs, a broken leg, a torn tongue, massive internal injuries including bruised lungs and a bruised liver and a chest cavity filled with blood. (more…)

NEW YORK — A fluffy little dog named Lexi is being called a hero for helping to rescue an 85-year-old neighbor who collapsed in his Brooklyn apartment.

BEAR MOUNTAIN, N.Y. — For Melissa Hotchkiss, going on a hike with her Shar-Pei mix, Jesse, took the bite out of meeting new people.

The two were among a pack of 13 humans and six dogs brought together for a hike at Harriman State Park, 45 miles north of New York City, by Leashes & Lovers, a social networking group, and its partner, Outdoor Bound, to meet new people. If love or friendship was in the air, their dogs would sniff it out. (more…)
